God’s Faithfulness

As Stephen and I walked out of church that Sunday morning, one of the ushers handed us a plain white envelope.  Sitting in our car we looked at that envelope…..maybe this would be God’s way of providing the funds we needed.  The financial needs for our boy’s adoption were overwhelming……more than what Stephen and I together made in a single year.  I had visions of a $10,000 check…….wow, that would be so amazing.  God’s amazing doesn’t always look like ours.  With trembling fingers we opened the envelope and nestled inside……a crisp 20 dollar bill.  From our human perspective 20 bucks is almost nothing when what you need is…..well, many, many thousands of dollars.  But that $20 taught us more about God’s faithfulness than any other gift we received.

A few weeks later we were handed another envelope……and inside……$20.  And I was reminded of the account in Luke 21:1-4:

“Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box,  and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins.  And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them.  For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”

And like this widow, someone was giving to us out of their “poverty”.  And God was teaching me about his faithfulness.  Every few weeks we would receive a plain white envelope and the reminder that came with that envelope was:

Philippians 4:19 (ESV)

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

Our need was great, but our God was greater.
