Sea Treasures

On this trip to the beach we have found so many sea treasures.  Last Tuesday, after weathering out several days of rain, the beach was full of conch shells.  Carlos had a great time hunting for shells.  All the kids loved finding and collecting the beautiful shells.  The beach was also full of washed up live starfish.   We found many, many starfish and tried to get them back into the ocean.

Then a few days later we found hundreds and hundreds of sand dollars.  The tide was very low, probably the lowest I’ve ever seen at Hilton Head, and the ocean created a great tide pool and sandbar.  The sand dollars buried themselves in the wet sand and left a circle impression in the sand.  All the little kids loved digging up the sand dollars and running them out into the waves.

And last week Carlos caught his first fish!  It was a fairly large fish and he was completely thrilled.  Carlos put the fish into a bucket of water and went back out into the ocean to fish for more.  The smaller kids were quite intrigued and kept poking the pool ol fish with sea sticks and throwing sand into the bucket.  We went out to play in the water and when I got back the poor fish was expired! Guess he had a little too much excitement.  Carlos took him up to the house and put him in the fridge to wait for dinner. Right before dinner Carlos scaled and gutted the fish and I fried him, but I’m pretty sure Carlos enjoyed the catching partway more than the eating part.

We have also found starfish, horseshoe crabs, jellyfish, a HUGE crab (that almost pinched Kai’s leg before he even knew it was behind him)and a sea turtle (he had died and was washing ashore, but it was so interesting to see him).
